More than 100 people came together for tea, cake and dancing at two Silver Sunday vintage tea parties in Send and East Horsley on Sunday 4 October.

The parties, at Send Church Rooms and East Horsley Village Hall, were run by the home care provider Home Counties Carers, which has now marked Silver Sunday this way for five years.

Silver Sunday is a national day celebrating older people, with the aim of giving them chances to meet, connect with others and join in activities in their own communities.

Music, dancing and WI cakes

Both parties had a vintage theme and live music, and guests were encouraged to get up and dance.

The food came from East Horsley WI, which made the sandwiches and a spread of cakes and also sent volunteers to help through the afternoon. They worked alongside volunteers from Home Counties Carers, including family members and former staff, and from Chores & Challenges. Between them they set up the halls, welcomed guests, served the refreshments and cleared away afterwards.

“Companionship, connection and a sense of community”

Becs Page, managing director of Home Counties Carers, said:

“We were absolutely delighted to celebrate this year’s Silver Sunday by bringing together over 100 people from the local community for two very special tea parties.

“At Home Counties Carers, we see just how important companionship, connection and a sense of community are to people, especially as we grow older.

“It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying good company, conversation, music and of course, cake!”

She thanked the people who made the afternoons happen:

“I am incredibly proud of the team at Home Counties Carers for organising and hosting the events and very grateful to the WI and the team at Chores & Challenges for their very kind support in making the celebrations so special.”

The company says it has twice been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and has twice won Home Care Provider of the Year in Surrey.
