Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November 2026. Guildford's borough service has begun at 9.45am at Holy Trinity, then the parade to the Castle Grounds.
Remembrance Sunday 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. The Royal British Legion’s own Poppy Appeal key dates put the March Past the Cenotaph on 8 November, with Armistice Day and the two-minute silence on Wednesday 11 November (Royal British Legion, Poppy Appeal).
Guildford Borough Council has not yet published its 2026 arrangements. It put out its 2025 page on 23 October, so the detail for this year is likely to land in the last week of October. What follows is the shape the borough’s civic Remembrance has taken in the two most recent years, from the council’s own accounts of them. We will update this page when the 2026 timings are confirmed.
What normally happens in Guildford
The borough runs two civic acts of Remembrance, one on the Sunday and one on Armistice Day itself.
Remembrance Sunday. In 2025 the council set out this order (Our acts of Remembrance for 2025):
- Flowers are laid under the VC stones in Tunsgate shortly before the service.
- The Borough Service of Remembrance begins at 9.45am at Holy Trinity Church on the High Street. All are welcome, and it is livestreamed on the church’s YouTube channel.
- The parade forms at the top of Guildford High Street and marches to the Castle Grounds.
- The two-minute silence is held there, followed by wreath laying at the war memorials.
The council’s account of the 2024 parade fills in the route and the music: the parade was led by the Friary Brass Band and made its way down the High Street, through Tunsgate to the Castle Grounds, where the silence was kept at 11am and the Last Post played before wreaths were laid (Our acts of Remembrance for 2024). Veterans, cadets, the Deputy Lieutenant, the Mayor of Guildford, councillors and other dignitaries joined the silence.
Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November 2026. The 2025 page describes a short ceremony outside the Guildhall: gather from 10.50am on Guildford High Street and observe the two-minute silence at 11am. In 2024 the same ceremony ran from the Guildhall balcony and included a welcome by Canon Simon Butler, the Last Post sounded by Richard Straker of the Friary Brass Band, the silence at 11am, the Reveille and a reading of the Kohima Epitaph, with the University of Surrey Concert Band playing in the run-up to 11am.

Holy Trinity’s own online calendar for November 2026 currently lists only its standing Sunday pattern, a 10am Eucharist and 6pm Choral Evensong, with no civic service added yet (A Church Near You). That is normal at this distance; the civic service is added later.
Road closures
Guildford Borough Council keeps a running table of town centre closures. Checked on 6 September 2026, it carried entries for Sunday 1 November, Tuesday 3 November, Sunday 15 November and Saturday 28 November, and no entry at all for Sunday 8 November (Guildford town centre temporary road closures).
Do not read that as “the High Street stays open”. It means no order for the parade had been added to that page when we looked. The council asks readers to check the page regularly for updates, and the parade itself moves down the High Street and through Tunsgate, so expect restrictions on the morning whether or not they appear in that table. Our Guildford roadworks and travel page tracks what is actually shut each week.
Parking on the morning
This is the one piece of practical advice we can give with confidence, because it comes from the council’s own tariff.
Sunday charging in Guildford’s town centre car parks runs from 11am. The borough service starts at 9.45am and the silence falls at 11am, so a car parked before 11am on Remembrance Sunday is inside the free window for the part of the morning that matters. The catch is the return: charging then runs to 10pm, so a ticket is needed if you stay on.
If you would rather not think about it, Guildford Park on Guildford Park Road is free all day on a Sunday, and Walnut Tree Close at Woodbridge Meadows is free at weekends. Both are a walk from the High Street. The full tariff, including the Sunday free arrival window between 4pm and 5pm, is on our parking in Guildford page.
The Poppy Appeal
The Royal British Legion’s 2026 appeal launches nationally on 22 October, when poppies reach supermarkets, shops and the Poppy Shop online. London Poppy Day is 29 October and the Festival of Remembrance is at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 7 November.
Guildford’s own collection dates are not out yet. In 2025 the council said volunteer collectors would be in Guildford from Saturday 1 November to Sunday 9 November. The Legion has repeatedly flagged a shortage of volunteer local area organisers covering Guildford, Waverley and Woking, so the town’s collection window depends on who steps forward.
Elsewhere in the borough
The council’s framing is that these two are the civic acts, alongside “many others taking place across Guildford Borough”. Parish churches and village memorials in Ash, Shere, Ripley, Send, Worplesdon, Effingham and the Horsleys hold their own services, usually at 10.45am for an 11am silence, and they publish locally rather than centrally. Check your parish council or church noticeboard rather than assuming the borough page covers you.
